MATT MCCLENAHEN: Anytime I get a new client, a criminal case, the first step that I take is to ascertain whether there are any available defenses. Sometimes there are, sometimes there aren't. There's defenses available. Then certainly, we have the option of going to trial.

With State College being a college town, there are obviously a lot more DUIs per capital than in most parts of Pennsylvania. And quite frankly, most of the time, people don't have a defense to DUI. However, an attorney can still do a lot to ameliorate some of the harsh consequences that follow from a DUI.

A lot of times an attorney can help to keep the person out of jail or to lesson the mandatory driver's license suspension. The person's a first time offender, a lot of times, we can get the person into a first time offenders' program called ARD that will result in dismissal of the charges. And ultimately, we're able to expunge the person's arrest record.

Even if you're blatantly guilty of DUI, there's still a lot that an attorney can do to help you out of the situation.
